Can you use LED light bulbs in regular fixtures?

LEDs are great for many reasons, but it’s a fact that they’re not always the best option for all situations. Generally, LED light bulbs can be used in regular fixture, but there is one very important condition to keep in mind.

Can LEDs replace regular light bulbs? Well the answer is “yes” and “no.” LEDs are a great lighting solution in many scenarios because of their low power usage and long lifespan (they last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs), but they simply don’t work with every type of lamp fixture.

So, for example, the answer is yes if you use an inline fixture (like a chandelier or a ceiling light fixture) or install LED strip lights inside a regular bulb socket. But you may not need LEDs inside an existing chandelier because LED lighting solution are good enough for most other types of fixtures (for example, they’re not too bright for arcadia fixtures).

LEDs operate by converting electricity into light. In order to do that, it needs to pass through a circuit that generates heat and generates UV rays. However, all traditional light bulbs have an internal metal coil which can heat up easily and the UV rays are dangerous for health as well.

Most LED bulbs are SMD (surface-mount diode) bulbs, which means that they have no internal metal coil. That’s why they can be used in both fixtures with traditional light bulb or fixtures without.

However, it’s important to know that SMD bulbs with UV rays are not safe for homes and businesses. They can make the plastics inside the fixtures worse, including color-changing plastic covers you probably have in your chandeliers and modern lamps. The UV rays can also cause discoloration on the surfaces of metals (for example, the white finish in chrome fixtures).

Also, if you’re planning to use LEDs in chandeliers with plastic covers, you should know that the plastic covers should be removable or at least heat-resistant because LEDs generate a lot of heat. Most SMD bulbs have a glass cover that helps dissipate the heat.

LED emitters come in many different shapes and sizes and they can be dangerous for home and business owners as well. That’s why it’s very important to choose LED bulbs with proper LED chips that are not harmful. While most type of LEDs are safe, there is one type you should avoid using in your chandeliers – high power LEDs (with a white casing).
